Cool

July 1, 2005 by jameyt

Someone told me last week that this would be a terrible week to head to Florida. Not because of the sharks, but the heat. Especially in South Florida (we’re due west of Miami).

Well the high today was 85 degrees. It’s partly cloudy but enough sunshine to get a nice tan (or burn). I hear the high today in Memphis was either 100 or 101!

The lead story last night on the Ft. Myer’s NBC station was a shark story. A guy caught a 9-foot shark fishing off of a pier. It took him most of the day to reel it in. Of course, they talked with lots of people on the street about sharks and going into the water. It was a good story, well worth a lead I think.

July ratings began today. This isn’t a big deal for tv stations since advertisers don’t set any long-term rates based on July numbers. Vacations are even allowed in July as long as there are enough reporters and photographers to cover the news and the anchor desk.

A friend of mine, Baton Rouge meterologist Jake Skellet has announced he is getting out of the business and going into pharmaceutical sales. Congratulations Jake, I’m glad the job opportunity will take you back close to home. What is it with pharma sales and news folks? Jake is one of several on-air people I’ve known to make the switch.

A Meridian tv station is closing it’s shop, leaving just one local newscast in that market.
