This was the thing I remember hearing when the news interrupted an episode of “Bewitched” that I was watching after school on August 16th 1977. My mom was vacuuming in another room when I ran in to tell her what I had seen.
I was never that big of an Elvis fan and never really listened to a lot of his music until I started dating a girl in college who turned me on to the King of Rock and Roll. I still have the cd I bought on the 10th anniversary of his death.
I covered several of the vigils outside Graceland the past few years and though I’ve never understood why these people come back to cry over his gravesite, I’ve always been fascinated by their love and devotion.
The poster you see here was bought by my dad at a yardsale in Birmingham several years ago. It was promoting a show at the Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Center. Notice anything particularly interesting about the date of the show? It was for a concert 5 days after he died.
Speaking of Elvis, I’ll be headed to Tupelo tomorrow for the big Tupelo Furniture Market. Maybe I’ll run by the king’s birthplace.
