He would have set the show on fire tonight in NY.
Back in 1975 the silver fox lit up the card that listed John Denver as CMA’s Entertainer of the Year. If Charlie had of been on stage tonight in the role of Billy Joel or Shania Twain, I’ll bet he would have repeated his stunt.
It’s not that I think Keith Urban is a bad artist, I like his music. But it’s not country.
Like a lot of the CMA awards in recent years tonight’s show was a contradiction. Country music it seems is either retro/traditional such as Lee Ann Womack and Martina McBride and Brad Paisley or it’s pop/rock such as Big and Rich and Urban.
I was looking forward to the Dolly Parton/Elton John duet tonight, but (if you’ll pardon the expression) it was a ‘bust’. I did like the Sugarland/Bon Jovi duet which was more country that rock and the performances of Brooks and Dunn and Garth Brooks (on the streets of NY).
And did you notice this year’s awards show seemed (at times) like the Gospel Music Awards. Songs by Brooks and Dunn, Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood were more Christian than some songs I’ve heard during church services.
All in all, I thought it was a fairly good show, but I’m looking forward to the 40th annual awards next year back in Nashville where it belongs.
