Keeping up on my music

May 19, 2005 by jameyt

Today’s selections: Jackson Browne “Running on Empty” and Vince Gill’s “Pocket Full of Gold”.

Two discs I probably bought within a few months of each other in the early 90s. Neither would have been my choice for the day. I felt like listening to something more upbeat, but in keeping with my experiment I simply closed my eyes and grabbed two cds from the shelf.

I was thinking though, for me a spring or summer sounding cd isn’t necessarily because of the beat or tempo or lyrics of the song. There are several cds I consider to be “summer cds” because that’s when I bought them or when I first heard them.

For instance: the “Say Anything” soundtrack screams spring and summer to me because that was my soundtrack for the spring of 1990. Santana’s “Supernatural” sounds sumer to me even though I bought it in the fall. Tom Petty’s “Full Moon Fever”: summer. Paul Simon’s “Graceland”, spring break 1987. Mother’s Finest “Another Mother Further”: summer. Morris Day and the Time’s “What Time is It?”: summer. Steve Perry’s “Street Talk”: summer of 1986. And maybe my favorite non-Jimmy Buffett summer album: The Beach Boys’ “Pet Sounds”.

So what do you care about what I’m listening to? Grab an old cd that you haven’t heard in a long time and remember all of those summers when life was more fun.

Got a great summer cd? leave them in comments.
