Signing Day

February 2, 2005 by jameyt

I wonder where Logan Young will get updates on college football’s signing day today since the jury will convene this morning and be charged by a judge to determine whether the longtime Alabama booster is guilty of buying a player.

Knowing Logan Young, I imagine after his early appearance in court he’ll retire to a hotel room where he can log on to his favorite chat rooms and find out if Alabama gets the players it wants.

If you think that sounds crazy, you’re right but that’s how nuts Young is about football. I imagine his NCAA ban that forbids him to watch his favorite school from the executive suites has put a damper on his college football watching the past few seasons. He can’t have contact with the team. He can’t sit in the VIP rooms where he can chat with the athletic director and coaches. He isn’t supposed to have any players or prospects visit his Tuscaloosa hotel room.

But Logan Young feels a sense of ownership with the Crimson Tide. Much like Jerry Jones has with the Dallas Cowboys. Of course, Jones owns the Cowboys, Young didn’t even attend Alabama. He went to Vandy. But since his daddy was tight with Bear Bryant, Young was too.

There’s a story that Logan Young took the Bear out on the town the night prior to his last game at the Liberty Bowl in Memphis. The two got drunk, the story goes. Real drunk. And when Bear stood out on the field with the Tide on a cold, rainy Memphis night, he caught pneumonia which would eventually kill him a few weeks later. Whether that story is true I don’t know.

But I do know that Logan Young is just as interested in Bama’s 2005 recruiting class as he is in the jury’s verdict.
