I’m starting my own countdown tonight. 12 days before the move. Our house is covered in boxes now. My office: nearly all boxed up. Today turned out to be our last Sunday in our Sunday school class. A pretty big deal for us as we’ve been members of that class for about 8 years.
We’ve got about 8 days between “get out of one house” and “get in the other” so we’ll be homeless for a bit. We’ve decided to take about a week of that and stay at the Opryland Hotel so Cameron and the kids will have a vacation while Daddy goes to work.
We’ve now lived in Southaven longer than anywhere my wife has ever lived. It’s also the longest place I’ve called home except for my hometown and the house my mom and dad still live in. It’s kind of funny that despite living here for 8 years, we’ve moved twice within the last year and the third time is coming up soon.
It doesn’t seem possible that it’s been two years since the station on the river reneged on it’s contract offer and showed me the door. I’m thinking of erecting a statue of my former general manager in the backyard of our new home.
Why? Well I got the idea from Enterprise, Alabama. The good folks there learned a lot about the Boll Weevil back around the turn of the century (1900, not 2000) or so. The weevil came in and devoured their cotton crops. A man by the name of H.M. Sessions figured that peanuts would be a good idea for planting since apparently the weevil didn’t like peanuts.
Other farmer followed and instead of Enterprise going belly-up, the prospered. In 1919 the city erected a boll weevil monument right in the center of town since it was this bug that forced the city to change.
Anyone know a monument maker?
